I've was thinking, idly over the last few days, but in a more specific way last night. About 'Sin'. It's usually scary enough when I've 'been thinking' but probably more-so when it's a topic such as this. Now, the Good Book
tells us that we have seven primary, or 'deadly' sins and ten commandments, and all sorts of other plagues and locusts and what-have-you. In case you've been under a rock since the world was created six thousand years ago, the list of those sins reads as such: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride.
These are not to be confused with the Ten Commandments, even though some of them overlap, and even though some of them contradict one another, and even though, God himself is clearly seen to break them on a regular basis. But that's another story for another time, and if you've already swallowed the Sinai-de in the Flavor Aid that Moses offered you then God help you, indeed.
But for today, we're not really talking about this in depth, just bringing up the concepts because they relate to what I really
plan to talk about. We supposedly have seven of these little buggers, but I think they're wrong.
Lust: Seriously? A Sin? If it's a sin, then you're doing it wrong. Maybe this is something they added simply to give an added measure of guilt and a few more 'Hail Mary's to priests after they touch schoolboys. Otherwise, I'm calling BS on Lust being a sin. Rather, I say: yes, let's try that again, please.
Gluttony: This one we're going to simply pass over because this is not a lecture on hypocrisy today. I'll save that for another time.
Greed: Holy shit, don't get me started! See above, to the 9th power!
Sloth: Trivia! Sloth, back in the day of this original usage, didn't mean 'laziness'. It's quite fine and not a sin at all to be lazy. Sloth originally stood for 'sadness' or 'depression' . True story, you can look it up. So, kids! Remember, it's a sin to not be happy!
Wrath: This one's tough for me. I'm a big fan of wrath. After lust, it's probably my favourite. Move along, folks, move along :P
Envy: This is the newbie of the sins. He wasn't on the list to start with, but he throws his weight around now. It's funny, envy being a sin in a system where they're hell-bent on monogamy and possession and control of the female of the species. Seems like all that nonsense would be rooted where, exactly? Ahhhh! Envy! So, where I do rather see envy as a silly thing and something I would like to personally overcome, It seems a bit ...well, see the comment about hypocrisy, and I'll let it go for now.
Pride: We're not talking Lions here folks, although, I really DO think Christianity needs to become more familiar
with Lions again.. For some reason, Pride or Vanity is deemed THE worst of these sins. Which is pretty funny, considering the multi million dollar churches I see daily, and the 'better than you' attitudes they contain. You'd better scrape up a balance, suckers. Don't have pride, but don't be down on yourself enough to slip into sloth! Damned if you do, damned if you don't! Literally!
Now that we've gotten the introductions out of the way, I can get on to what I actually came here to talk about today.
That, my friends, is Complacency
To me, this is the largest sin in life. To settle. To give up. To accept things as they are. To just sit around and think 'this'll do' and wait 'till you die
. Fuck all kinds of that. I'm with Chuck
on this one "May I never be complete. May I never be content. May I never be perfect. "
Give me something to strive for. I'm not saying I want things to be difficult or hard or bad. Not that I want to suffer or be poor or have drama. I am saying that no matter how wonderful and magical things are, I will always work for just a little bit more. Always dream bigger. Always reach for that star, for those planets in alignment on a four year horizon. You can never have too much laughter and love and wonder.
I do believe in perfection. Hell, I've found it myself a time or two before. I believe it's something you strive for and something you work to maintain. I believe that complacency robs you of perfection.
I am replacing all your deadly sins.
I am replacing all your commandments.
Sin you not with Complacency, Hypocrisy, Racism, Oppression, Enslavement, Prejudice, or Stupidity
I say to you:
Thou Shalt Never be Complacent
Thou Shalt Not Deny Passion
Thou Shalt Dream
Thou Shalt Foster Hope
Thou Shalt Love With All Thy Heart
Thou Shalt Create
Thou Shalt Follow Thy Whimsy
Thou Shalt Be Just, Steadfast and True
Thou Shalt Have Compassion
Thou Shalt Be Mindful and Never Take Anything For Granted
